Lord of the Flies (1990)

Viewer review: How well it all started

There are films that don't grow old from year to year, and Lord of the Flies is one of them. It is a social drama relevant at any time. The film adaptation of this work quite clearly conveys the author's idea that in the absence of external control, a person can turn into a monster. The film is about children, but it is far from childish.

The story tells the story of teenage cadets who find themselves on a deserted island as a result of a plane crash. They need to survive in the wild, but the most important thing is yet to come for them, it's themselves... I'll make a reservation right away that the situation is somewhat exaggerated. Firstly, everyone survived the accident, and only the pilot was injured, which is somewhat surprising. Secondly, the island itself looks like paradise: there are no poisonous snakes, other dangerous predators, water at your side, etc. Only “prey”, but the heroes themselves become “hunters”. The canvas of the work was also helped by the fact that despite their small age (10-14 years), all the boys were cadets, which means they had military endurance and the ability to survive in extreme conditions. I believe that all these conventions are allowed specifically to focus on human relationships, and not on related problems. This minimalism may scare some people away, but a true cinematographer should value content, not form.

As the film progresses, you pay attention to key points in the story that reflect the transition of a civilized person to a tribe. If at first an attempt is made to create a kind of society with general meetings and distribution of responsibilities, the situation rapidly deteriorates over time. Spears, face painting, increasing cruelty, ostentatious punishments and, finally, hunting people are all stages of the path described above. Killing a boar is key in my opinion. The inexperienced cadets were unable to do this, but the “hunters” managed to do it without problems. Having realized their strength and superiority, they received power that they failed to use.

Crowd psychology, presented here in its most terrible form, also plays an important role. And those who followed it did not understand the simple truth that those who join the power (the majority) create it themselves.

The film is interesting in terms of reflecting the human essence, which, having lost its social fetters, appears in all its glory. After watching, you involuntarily wonder “what would I do in this place?” , succumbed to the herd instinct, or tried to preserve everything human to the very end, what essentially puts us at the top of evolution. And what can one person do against a crowd? The picture makes you think, and that's the main thing.
